Hollywood Notebook
In these poems, we find artists wandering like ghosts down glittering paths, while remembering a past that no longer belongs to them; police officers incapable of resisting corruption; vagabonds subsisting in a paradise designed by plastic surgeons; and racial minorities whose blood irrigates the roots of democracy. Cinema is the only accepted religion in this corner of California where sinners and losers end up decaying in a roadside motel, forever condemned to listen to the "sounds of the night". The images in these poems are so vivid that sometimes they seem like photographs, despite their lyricism; story merges with verse; facts with dreams; critical reflection with uncontrolled love.
