Alcoi-New York

Original Title: Alcoi-Nova York

Publication: 1988

Author: (Estate of) Isabel-Clara Simó

Six stories set between Alcoi, the author’s hometown in the Valencian Community, Spain, and New York, exploring the human condition through extreme, moving, or unsettling situations.

A woman is hit by a truck and wakes up, bewildered, in the body of a baby in New York; a teacher tries to conduct a class but is thrown off by a student of very sharp intellect; a rural couple lives a relationship marked by silence and resignation; a surveyor sees a virgin painted by Bellini and can no longer look at any other woman; a young boy witnesses his father hitting his mother and draws irreversible conclusions; a naked woman in bed reflects on pleasure and the body. These are the starting points of the six stories that make up Alcoi – New York, each beginning with an apparently anecdotal situation that leads to a deeper exploration of the human condition.
