War Fairy by Daniela Tully became our hot book of The London Book Fair 2016, with two deals closed just days before: Garzanti pre-empted Italian rights, and Gads Forlag snapped Danish rights. At the fair, we closed a French deal with Fayard, and Vulkan pre-empted Serbian rights shortly after.
We are now delighted to announce that Thomas Dunne Books (Macmillan Group) will be the English publisher in the United States and Canada, with Melanie Fried as the very enthusiastic editor behind this deal.
War Fairy is the debut novel by Daniela Tully, who writes in English despite being German herself. Her debut is a moving story of love and secrets across generations. It begins with one of the most surprising opening scenes that you’ll ever read, and keeps readers charmed and intrigued with links and revelations from 1930s Germany to today in the Catskills, USA.
War Fairy is also story of following true love no matter what obstacles and dangers arise. With two unique and strong heroines and with fascinating settings, this debut novel will appeal to readers of all generations, and introduces Daniela Tully as a warm, sparkling and original new voice in fiction.
As Daniela Tully says: «The protagonist, Martha, was inspired by my own grandmother, who I was very close to. She received a farewell letter from her own twin brother, also decades after his death. I still have the letter –and still remember the day when she received it and how sad she was. I never forget that moment!»
Daniela Tully is German, born in Bielefeld (Maya's city). She has lived in the USA and the setting in the Catskills is where her American husband grew up, a place she also knows very well. Daniela has been working in the field of story-telling for decades, mainly in film and television. She has been involved in projects such as the critically-acclaimed Fair Game, box-office hits Contagion and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, as well as the Oscar-winning The Help. Daniela currently lives in Dubai.
