Lizards Smell of Grass
Original title: Las lagartijas huelen a hierba
Author: Cristina Sánchez-Andrade
Once upon a time or once upon a no-time, in a world of dry kitschen-garden, of muddy rivers and fat squashed frogs, in a world which always smells of grass, two children were looking for the only thread that still bound them to childhood: the memory of their mother, kept hidden by two old hags. The wickedness all around pushed them into doing a sort of perverse game in order to gain the two witches. In this terrible and wonderful fairy-tale for adults, just between the cruel realism and the highest lyrical feelings, the author reveals us that life is drama and goodness is suspicious. No morality in a novel that basically underlines the right that children have to live their own childhood.
