But in the early hours of July 29, a Military Intelligence unit storms the family's home in Pontevedra and arrests Susana's father, a Spanish Army captain and a clandestine member of the Democratic Military Union (Unión Militar Democrática), one of the groups of officers who, from within the armed forces, were conspiring against Franco's dictatorship.
Susana is fifteen years old and about to leave for England. From Norfolk, unaware of what has happened, she senses that something has been broken forever. When she returns, she must learn to navigate a Spain that these memoirs recreate in vivid detail: summers in Galicia, schoolyard recesses, first records, political whispers around the lunch table, the fear that rings the doorbell in the middle of the night, and friends who cross to the other side of the street.
