Flowers of the Past
Tina accompanies her mother, Marga, and her uncle to the cemetery on All Saints’ Day to honor her grandmother Aurora. When they find some mysterious flowers already placed on her grave and Tina witness the adults’ disproportionate reaction, she begins to suspect that part of her family’s history has been kept from her.
Through the lives of three women from three different generations—Aurora, Marga, and Tina—the novel tells a story that spans the post-Civil War period, the democratic transition in the 1970s, and Spain in the 2000s. Decisions made out of love, fear, or loyalty echo across generations, deeply affecting those who come after. From the Maquis guerrillas hiding in the mountains to the hallways of a private American school, Flowers of the Past is an intimate portrait of inherited trauma, family silences, and the complexity of motherhood. All of it unfolds in Valencia—a living backdrop that, like its protagonists, evolves over time.
