Original title: Coco
Author: Cristina Sánchez-Andrade

This novel is a fictionalised biography about the private and intimate life of one of the most unknown and influential women of the 20th century, Coco Chanel. Written in first person, the novel delves into Coco Chanel’s humble origins, her education in a nun’s convent, her ‘escape’ to Paris and her first jobs as a seamstress, as well as her rise to the very peak of the fashion industry and her roller-coaster love life with some of Europe’s most desired bachelors. Despite her intense and experience-packed life she never fulfils her quest for happiness and spends the last days of her life lying alone in a luxury suite in the Hotel Ritz in Paris … – which is the starting point of this novel. Coco also portrays an interesting and very well documented historical background, written from a female point of view: from the technical and scientific advances which Coco Chanel witnessed, to the changes of a society which struggled for women’s emancipation in Europe.

Cristina Sánchez-Andrade’s writing style has been admired and praised by critics, which have highlighted her special use of adjectives and her acute observational skills and sensitivity. Cristina’s fascination for the lives of outstanding and mysterious women brought her to experiment with the idea of ‘getting under the skin’ of Coco Chanel and writing a novel in which she looks back on her life, tracing her happiest moments as well as her misfortunes.
