The Birth of Whales

Prize Narrativa Breve Repsol YPF 2007
Prize San Clemente to the best novel published in Galician in 2007.

The Birth of Whales recreates the sentimental biography of various characters who were born with already traced destinies, which they can hardly escape. When her mother falls ill, the protagonist, a sea biologist working in South California, has to come back home to take up the control of the family business in Galicia. While she decides what to do with the new destiny imposed by her family, the young girl will have to face the reconciliation with her mother and come to terms with her brother’s memory, a mentally disabled man who died when she still was a child.

Feelings, passions and memories blow up in a moving narration that unveils the world through the look of someone who wants to live in a completely different way, far from social constrictions and family impositions.
