Prison Stories
When, in his cell, Andrés Rabadán began to write these anecdotes and observations about prison life, his idea wasn't to publish a book. He was merely writing letters to his friends \"outside.\" Now, thanks to those friends, Andrés Rabadán's writings have been gathered into a book about which he says: \"The object of this collection of short-stories is to bring you [the reader] closer to the surrealistic world I've been inhabiting for nine years: a psychiatric prison ward. If you're interested, and you have a moment, look through the window of these pages, because they might just make you laugh, maybe you'll even enjoy yourself. Humbly, I've tried to portray the situations and the characters around me. Some of them are horrifying, others laughable. Comical and dramatic at the same time. A whole slew of disquieting and impossilbe people inhabit this other dimension from which you, thank God, have been spared. Maybe you won't believe some of the things you’ll read. But everything that I have seen and experienced is explained in these pages exactly as it happened. If you have the inclination, you can take a look at it all from the comfort of your own homes. Nice and cozy in bed. You can look, immodestly, but with every right to, at what lies beyond the door to my dimension. And if you find it intriguing, you will make me immensely happy. That is my intention.\" Since 1994 Andrés Rabadán has been interned in various Catalan prisons for the murder of his father. Since April 2002 he is being held in the psychiatric ward of the prison called ‘Quatre Camins.’ 200pp. Right sold to: Rosa dels Vents (in Catalan)(Random House Mondadori), 2003 Plaza Janés (in Spanish)
