Not just an unconventional love story, Amor Idiota (Fool's Love) is also a reflection on love in general. The story is set in Barcelona after the Olympic games, at a time when people are slowly beginning to return to their routine lives after several months of dreaminess. The young protagonist, about to turn thirty-five without any clear idea of his prospectives for the future, runs head on into two circumstances which will force a change in his life. First, the news of the death of a friend reaches him five months after the fact; and second, the chance meeting with a girl who works hanging banners from city streetlights. As with all of Baulenas' work, Barcelona is this novel's backdrop, framing the stories of very real, flesh-and-blood people trying with all their might to hold on to frienship and love.
