Lluís-Anton Baulenas (Barcelona, 1958), Catalan narrative writer and playwright, has won prizes such as the Documenta, Carlemany, Prudenci Bertrana, Crítica Serra d’Or and, most recently, the Premi Ramon Llull, one of the highest awards in the Catalan literary scene, with a strong presence in the Spanish-speaking market also. Baulenas has been dedicated professionally to literature for over fifteen years, and is now one of the most acclaimed Catalan authors.
While his works for the stage usually reflect the great concerns of contemporary society, his narrative work is devoted to an attempt to single out and provide a setting for key moments throughout the 20th century in Catalan history. However, this is always from the individual’s point of view, dealing with the character’s conflicts with him- or himself and with the society in which he must live.
About his work Considered “the chronicler of Barcelona”, Lluís-Anton Baulenas is famous for setting his stories against Barcelona's historical turning points and for turning anonymous people into “small heroes”. He provides his work with a strong sense of placement and attractive, plot-driven characters, portrayed in a very humane and sensitive style. His novels have also been praised for their universal appeal, as the critics have often pointed out:
" ... His tendency is to the universal (...) the tragedy he describes could well take place in any country, in any time. (...)” - Alexie Lorca for LIRE
“The inmense talent of Baulenas, a novelist of 44 years of age, resides in telling stories about people without a story, giving them the dimension of heroes." - Michèle Gazier for TÉLÉRAMA
"Baulenas knows how to switch from one tone (comedy) to another (drama) with easiness. (...) It is simply (and that is not bad at all) a good story well told.." - Edouard Waintrop for LIBÉRATION BOOKS SUPPLEMENT |
